This chair is a continuation into my studies of creating stools with no glue or metal hardware in the joinery; just pure wood to wood connective joinery. It began with reimagining the iconic Japanese bathstool by bringing up the stretcher to underneath the bathstool seat; out of view and connected without pegs.
The boards are orientatied to be seamless and are the only parts that are glued. The whole chair is kanna-finished (Japanese hand-planed) that creates a non-porous surface that there is no need for varnish (with careful use). Oil or varnish can be applied upon client's request.
The most common woods used in traditional Japanese buildings are Cypress and Cedar. Though, not so common in Europe, I continue using soft woods in my furniture pieces. Working with different types of Cedar interests me for its lightness, durability, resistance to rotting and water, its warmth and clean, beautiful grain.
I often don't work with many angles in house building in Japan, so I've only introduced angles where necessary. The seat is angled by cutting the bottom of the legs, but still ensuring the grain runs straight down for a peaceful effect. The undercarriage remains square to the seat. The backrest is also angled for comfort and slightly winged to embrace your back.
