What is the difference between booking in advance for my partner/friend and buying a gift voucher
- booking in advance for a specific date means you can take advantage of the ‘earlybird’ deal
- booking a specific date still allows for swapping dates (upto 1 month before booked date)
- booking a specific date means the participation must take place that calendar year
- gift vouchers allow for any date to be chosen
- gift vouchers are refunded at the end of the year if no suitable date is possible
- gift voucher recipients receive a PDF invitation card
Are the courses suitable for total beginners?
Yes, the BIG JOINERY course especially is a good place to start. The stool courses are also possible with enough patience and perserverance. What is the teaching style?
Tools will be introduced step-by-step according to the joinery being made. You will work on your own 1:1 sized joinery model. Each step of the process will be shown by myself and then you will try yourself. I tend to keep working whilst you do for reference. What is the language of instruction?
In gereral everything will be explained in English. In the resident country basic translation is possible. eg. basic German. In Japan, explanation by Japanese professionals will be translated to English. What are the course objectives?
Participants come for different reasons. I try to create a space for learning and exploration. Although the aim is to create a tight-fitting joint, it is really a task in which to discover the wonderful experience of working with Japanese hand tools and working with nature’s material. Whether you enjoy it for a one-off weekend (as a break from digital work perhaps) or as a springboard into a life-long hobby or for construction projects is completely up to you.Is it possible to participate with difficulties or disabilities?
Current workshop venues are unfortunately not wheelchair friendly. For those with other difficulties please get in contact and we will try to find a solution together.I am already a carpenter trained in Europe, does it make sense to join?
lf you haven’t been specifically taught in Japanese tools you could still find this course insightful. Some trained carpenters have come and found the tasks challenging. Sometimes its harder to teach that total beginners as nearly all Japanese tools are used in the opposite way to Western tools (mainly to be pulled than pushed). Working with wood as a natural material (instead of against) is also a big focus in the course. Can you recommend a course for carpentry in Japan?
Whilst my courses are aimed at people living outside of Japan, I would always recommend to experience woodworking in Japan if you are visiting. There are 3 schools I know of that teach in English: Somakousha, Suikousha and Mount Fuji Woodworking. Booking well in advance is advised.I need to apply for a visa first, can you hold a place for me?
Depending on the popularity of the course I can hold your place for a few weeks. It’s mainly on a case-by-case basis, so please get in contact to discuss the situation.I have my own Japanese tools, can I use them in the course?
Yes, of course. However, apart from saws other tools need to be set up. Whilst there won’t be enough time in a joinery course to set up there are courses in-person (and online) to help you with this. Bring them in any case to discuss over the breaks. How many participants are there typically in a course?
Stool course: upto 5 or up to 10Joinery course: upto 7 or 10 (depending on venue)
