BERLIN Beginner’s Japanese Furniture Workshop

Tempelhof, Berlin, GERMANY

31st May- 1st June 2025

A long awaited stool-making workshop for beginners! The workshop will be run by myself and furniture-maker Simone Ellero. We’ve been redesigning the bath stool by combining our knowledge in Japanese woodworking—drawing from both carpentry and furniture-making traditions—to create a split-seat bath stool for practising various techniques and to take home afterwards!

The intensive course (12hrs over 2 days) is hands-on learning of some basic Japanese carpentry and furniture techniques. You will build a small bath stool, designed with inspiration from the utilitarian, centuries-old, typical stool used in onsen. The making process involves basic joinery such as mortise and tenons, and shaping a squared beam to a cylinder using the Japanese hand plane Kanna.

The course is designed for beginner level skills in using hand tools to make tight-fitting joints. Austrian Pine, Japanese saws, chisels, kanna and other required tools are provided. Feel free to bring your own Japanese tools to try.  Maximum number of participants: 9 people
