Meditation stool

Emi Shinmura & Petrus Maree
Cyanotype on Cedar wood

20cm H
30cm W
15cm D

This stool is to aid the position of sitting crossed legged whilst in meditation. With similar construction as the bath stool, the only differences are the angle of the seat and non-parallel legs. In trying to achieve the purest form and materiality, the stool uses minimal timber for wood-to-wood joinery; there is even no glue between the joints. Cedar wood is used for its aesthetic appearance, aroma and durability.

Artist Petrus Maree finishes the composition through the interaction of light, water, classic-cyanotype chemicals, and time. A monochrome image is produced on the cedar-wood surface: starting off yellow-green on application, it turns a deep blue by exposure to sunlight. The striking, saturated blue emphasises the grain, suggesting wave or cloud-like patterns. Over time, meditation practice will develop a unique patina on the surface, thus inviting further collaboration on the stool.
