Split-top bath stool
Simone Ellero & Emi Shinmura
Cedar wood
20cm H
30cm W
15cm D
This stool was designed with inspiration from the utilitarian, centuries-old stool used in onsen in Japan. The split allows for water to easily run off the seat whilst showering. The redesign of the bath stool combines Emi and Simone’s knowledge in Japanese woodworking—drawing from both carpentry and furniture-making traditions.
The making process involves basic joinery such as mortise & tenons and shaping a squared beam to a cylinder using the Japanese hand plane. Part of the redesign was to make splayed legs with ninety-degree angled joints. A stool that can, with simple instructions, be built with minimal experience. The dimensioned drawings are available separately.
